The answer is Neuromuscular Dentistry (NMD)
Neuromuscular dentistry considers the entire system that controls the positioning and function of your jaw. Your dentist may be considering various types of dental treatment to improve your smile, to correct a misaligned bite or to relieve a painful condition. To provide you with an optimum bite that gives you a beautiful smile as well as healthy muscles and joints, your dentist will evaluate and study the complex relationship between your teeth, jaw joints and muscles. Your dentist will then apply neuromuscular principles to rebuild your bite.
NMD begins by relaxing the muscles around the jaw with the use of a TENS device. A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) device is an ultra-low frequency unit that deprograms and relaxes muscles. This allows us to correct and re-align your bite to where your muscles are most relaxed.
A K7 machine is then used to find your optimal jaw position. The K7 machine helps us to determine the optimal jaw position by using electromyography, sonography and jaw tracking scans. This very sensitive measuring equipment records your muscle tension and listens to your jaw joint while at rest and functioning.
At Life Time Smiles, we provide our neuromuscular patients with personalised orthotic devices to gently align the jaw. In this treatment, you will wear a removable (or, in some cases, fixed) dental appliance that will maintain the position of your jaw in a more relaxed position. This dental appliance is custom made according to your condition or to the position of your jaw and is as individual as our patients.
Restorative techniques such as
Implants, Empress
CEREC and
Invisalign are then used to restore your teeth.
At Life Time Smiles, we will be able to treat TMJ disorder effectively. Here, we don’t just treat the symptoms, we treat the cause.
