Understanding your diet is key to understanding the different foods and drinks that can contribute to dental health problems. There are numerous factors that contribute to dental decay including plaque control, dehydration, medication, disease and hereditary factors. A few of these issues are unavoidable, however, diet is one cause that we can all monitor and make the necessary adjustments required. A healthy diet consists of three main meals per day with limited snacking in between. This reduces the number of plaque acid attacks on the tooth enamel. A diet rich in calcium and low in acids and sugars is recommended. Remember to also eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and keep soft drinks and juices to a minimum.

“Decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth which changes sugar into acid. This acid then attaches to the teeth leading to decay” ( ADA media release)

“The increased consumption of highly processed foods containing carbohydrates (eg sugars) and in particular the regular snacking on these types of foods exposes teeth to an increased risk of dental disease” (ADA Media release)
