Fissure Sealants

Dentistry has changed dramatically over the years, we now take a more preventative approach and prefer to avoid decay forming, rather than restoring the tooth structure when it has become too late and decay has already developed within the tooth. We now use fissure sealants as a way of preventing the decay from happening.

The pits and fissures in the biting surface of the back teeth are a major site for dental decay due to food and plaque trapping. Your toothbrush cannot remove all of this debris and as a result decay can occur.

Once the back teeth have had fissure sealants placed, they will have a reduced risk of developing decay if they are kept clean and healthy by maintaining your daily brushing and flossing technique.

What is involved in the fissure sealant process?

  • A light air blast is used to clean the grooves of the teeth.
  • A laser light scans the top surface of the tooth, which measures the density of the tooth. A beep sounds if any micro decay is detected.
  • When confident there is no decay present, the tooth is painted with a white liquid and then cured with a light so that it becomes hard and sets.
  • The tooth is now successfully sealed and this whole process takes only 5 minutes.

At your six month continuing care visit your sealants will be checked to make sure it is still intact. If any problems are located they will be repaired as necessary to maintain your oral health and to minimise the risk of future decay.

Fissure sealants are recommended for young children’s teeth when their brushing skills are not quite developed. It is also recommended for adults with deep grooves and fissures in the molar region. At The Life Time Smiles Group, we will tell you if fissure sealants could benefit your situation and individual needs.
